What Actually Happens at a Cleaning and Checkup

If you have not been to the dentist in a while, or you are choosing a dental home in Buckley for the first time, it helps to know what actually happens once you are in the chair. A cleaning and checkup at Buckley Dental Care follows the same basic order every time, and none of the steps are a mystery. Here is what you can expect from the parking lot on Main Street to the moment you walk back out into the daylight.

Checking In

You will check in at the front desk just inside our door on Main Street, and one of our hygienists, Shelly, Danica, or Sissy, will come get you when the room is ready. All three have been doing this a long time between them, and patients often ask for one of them by name once they have had a visit or two. If it is your first time with us, take a minute to fill out or update your medical history, since that helps the whole team plan your visit properly.

Most checkups start with digital X-rays. We use low-radiation digital equipment, which means less exposure than older film X-rays and a picture that shows up on the screen right away instead of you waiting for film to develop. X-rays let your hygienist and Dr. Chaudhry see between the teeth and below the gumline, areas a visual exam alone cannot reach. Not every visit requires new X-rays. Your hygienist will let you know when it is time based on your history and how long it has been since your last set.

The Cleaning and Polishing

This is the part most people picture when they think of a dental visit. Your hygienist will clean along and just under the gumline to remove plaque and tartar buildup, working tooth by tooth around the whole mouth. After the cleaning, she will polish your teeth, which smooths the surface and lifts a lot of surface staining from coffee, tea, or wine. Throughout the cleaning, feel free to ask questions. Shelly, Danica, and Sissy all talk through what they are seeing as they go, so you are not left guessing about what is happening in your own mouth.

Buckley Dental Care includes a VELscope screening as part of preventative care. It is a handheld light your hygienist uses to look at the soft tissue in your mouth, cheeks, tongue, and throat, under a different kind of light than the room lighting. It only takes a couple of minutes and it is not an uncomfortable step. It is one more layer of routine screening built into your regular visit, not a separate appointment you have to schedule on your own.

The Exam With Dr. Chaudhry

Once the cleaning is done, Dr. Javaid Chaudhry comes in to examine your teeth and gums directly, review the X-rays with you, and talk through anything he is watching or would recommend addressing. Patients often mention that he takes his time and explains things clearly rather than rushing through the exam. If there is anything to address beyond routine care, he will walk you through the options himself, and there is never any pressure to decide anything on the spot.

After Your Visit

Before you leave, the front desk will help you get your next cleaning scheduled, generally around six months out, though your hygienist may suggest a different interval depending on your gum health. If anything came up during your exam that needs a closer look, we will talk through timing and next steps together before you head home. There is no pressure to decide anything about additional treatment on the spot. You will leave with a clear picture of where things stand and what, if anything, comes next.
