Kids and the Dentist: First Visits, Brushing, and Sealants

Taking a child to the dentist for the first time, or finding a new dental home for a growing family, comes with its own set of questions. Buckley Dental Care has been a family practice on Main Street since 1973, and seeing kids alongside their parents is a normal part of most days here. Here is what that actually looks like.

The First Visit

A first visit is mostly about getting comfortable. Your child will meet the team, sit in the chair, and get an exam and cleaning appropriate to their age. Our hygienists, Shelly, Danica, and Sissy, are used to working with kids of all ages and know how to keep a visit calm and unhurried rather than rushed. If your child is nervous, tell the front desk when you book, and we will plan the visit around that.

Oral Hygiene Education

Family Dentistry at Buckley Dental Care includes oral hygiene education for kids, not just a checkup and a wave goodbye. That means your hygienist will talk directly with your child about brushing, flossing, and why it matters, in language that actually lands for their age. Kids tend to take instructions from someone other than a parent more seriously, so a lot of families find this part of the visit genuinely useful once they are back home.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where deep grooves can be hard to keep clean with a toothbrush alone. They are a routine part of preventative care for many kids once their permanent molars come in. Dr. Chaudhry or your hygienist can talk through whether sealants make sense for your child during a regular checkup, so it is worth asking at your next visit.

If your child plays sports, an athletic mouth guard is worth asking about. A mouth guard fitted specifically for your child tends to stay in place and feel more comfortable than an off-the-shelf version from a sporting goods store, which makes it more likely they will actually wear it during practice and games rather than leaving it in a bag.

Helping a Nervous Kid Feel at Ease

It is normal for a young child, or even an older one, to feel nervous about a dental visit, especially the first couple of times. Our team tends to slow things down for a nervous kid rather than push through the appointment, explaining each step before it happens so nothing feels sudden. If your child has had a rough experience somewhere else, tell us that too. Knowing what to watch for going in helps Shelly, Danica, or Sissy plan the visit in a way that actually works for your child, rather than following the exact same script for every kid who sits down.

Buckley Dental Care has been family owned since 1973, and it is not unusual for us to see kids who grew up coming here themselves now bringing in their own children. Sissy, one of our hygienists, is actually one of them. She grew up in Carbonado going to Buckley Dental Care as a patient herself, and now works here as a hygienist. That kind of continuity tends to make for a calmer, more familiar experience for families over the years, rather than starting fresh with a new office every time your child needs a checkup.

If this is your child's first time with us, plan for a slightly longer appointment than a routine six-month cleaning. Bring along any dental records from a previous dentist if you have them, your insurance card, and a list of any medications your child takes. None of this is required to get started, but it helps the team put together a full picture from day one. If your child gets anxious about medical offices in general, mention that when you schedule, so the front desk and hygienist both know going in and can plan around it.

Because Buckley Dental Care sees both kids and adults, a lot of families book appointments for several kids, or a parent and a couple of kids, back to back on the same visit. That can mean one trip to Main Street covers everyone instead of several separate appointments spread across different weeks. Scheduling Around School and Activities

One thing families tell us they appreciate is that we are open evenings and weekends, Monday from noon to seven, Tuesday and Wednesday from seven to seven, and Saturday and Sunday mornings into early afternoon, which makes it easier to get kids in without pulling them out of a full school day every time.
